At age two, Laura Bridgman lost four of her five senses to scarlet fever. At age seven, she was taken to Perkins Institute in Boston to determine if a child so terribly afflicted could be taught. At age twelve, Charles Dickens declared her his prime interest for visiting America. And by age twenty, she was considered the nineteenth century's second most famous woman, having mastered language and charmed the world with her brilliance.

With Laura-by turns mischievous, temperamental, and witty-as the book's primary narrator, the fascinating kaleidoscope of characters includes the founder of Perkins Institute, Samuel Gridley Howe, with whom she was in love; his wife, the glamorous Julia Ward Howe, a renowned writer, abolitionist, and suffragist; Laura's beloved teacher, who married a missionary and died insane from syphilis; an Irish orphan with whom Laura had a tumultuous affair; Annie Sullivan; and even the young Helen Keller.

It’s as puzzling as another unsolved case on Sejer’s desk: the murder of a prostitute, found dead just before Egil went missing. Title:BIG IDEAS FORUM
Date:Monday, January 11, 2016
Time:6:45 PM
Library:NORTH VALLEY REGIONAL
Location:MEETING ROOM
Event Type:ADULT
Age Group:ADULTS, TEENS
Description:The Darknet
Most of us use the internet daily without realizing we are able to access only a very small part of online information and websites. The numerous online sites that are available only with restricted passwords are often referred to as the "dark net", in reference to its clandestine utilization by organizations of both "good guys" and "bad guys". Criminal websites are available there (you can buy, e.g., drugs, munitions, and slaves), as are websites used by political activists, whistle blowers, and intelligence professionals. Originally developed by the US Navy, the "dark net" is now a controversial technology within government circles. The NSA and FBI want to either shut it down or to be able to fully monitor it (by limiting encryption) while the DOD, Department of State, and others value it because of its usefulness. Even if you are not a covert operator, you will likely find this presentation quite informative and interesting

This program is co-sponsored by the New Friends of the North Valley Library.

Title:BOOKENDS: ADULT FICTION DISCUSSION GROUP
Date:Tuesday, January 19, 2016
Time:10:30 AM
Library:SOUTHEAST REGIONAL
Location:STAFF CONFERENCE ROOM
Event Type:BOOK DISCUSSION
Age Group:ADULTS
Description:Adults of all ages read and discuss fiction titles on the third Tuesday of each month. This month's title: Benediction by Kent Haruf. Summary: From the beloved and best-selling author of Plainsong and Eventide comes a story of life and death, and the ties that bind. When Dad Lewis is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he and his wife, Mary, must work together to make his final days as comfortable as possible. Their daughter, Lorraine, hastens back from Denver to help look after him; her devotion softens the bitter absence of their estranged son, Frank, but this cannot be willed away and remains a palpable presence for all three of them. Next door, a young girl named Alice moves in with her grandmother and contends with the painful memories that Dad's condition stirs up of her own mother's death. Meanwhile, the town's newly arrived preacher attempts to mend his strained relationships with his wife and teenaged son, a task that proves all the more challenging when he faces the disdain of his congregation after offering more than they are accustomed to getting on a Sunday morning. And throughout, an elderly widow and her middle-aged daughter do everything they can to ease the pain of their friends and neighbors. Despite the travails that each of these families faces, together they form bonds strong enough to carry them through the most difficult of times. Bracing, sad and deeply illuminating, Benediction captures the fullness of life by representing every stage of it, including its extinction, as well as the hopes and dreams that sustain us along the way. Here Kent Haruf gives us his most indelible portrait yet of this small town and reveals, with grace and insight, the compassion, the suffering and, above all, the humanity of its inhabitants.

Event Type:BOOK DISCUSSION
Age Group:ADULTS
Description:Discuss The Valley Of Amazement by Amy Tan. Discussion questions and meeting dates are available in our Reading Club booklet at the Customer Service Desk. Funded by the Fountain Hills Friends of the Library.
Additional Information:Moving between the dazzling world of courtesans in turn of the century Shanghai, a remote Chinese mountain village, and the rough-hewn streets of nineteenth-century San Francisco, Amy Tan's novel maps the lives of three generations of women connected by blood and history-and the mystery of an evocative painting known as "The Valley of Amazement."

Violet is one of the most celebrated courtesans in Shanghai, a beautiful and intelligent woman who has honed her ability to become any man's fantasy since her start as a "Virgin Courtesan" at the age of twelve. Half-Chinese and half-American, she moves effortlessly between the East and the West. But her talents belie her private struggle to understand who she really is and her search for a home in the world. Abandoned by her mother, Lucia, and uncertain of her father's identity, Violet's quest to truly love and be loved will set her on a path fraught with danger and complexity-and the loss of her own daughter.

Lucia, a willful and wild American woman who was once herself the proprietress of Shanghai's most exclusive courtesan house, nurses her own secret wounds, which she first sustained when, as a teenager, she fell in love with a Chinese painter and followed him from San Francisco to Shanghai. Her search for penance and redemption will bring her to a startling reunion with Flora, Violet's daughter, and will shatter all that Violet believed she knew about her mother.

Title:EXPLAINING THE WORLD THROUGH MYTHOLOGY: IRISH, WELSH AND NORSE MYTHOLOGY
Date:Thursday, January 21, 2016
Time:6:30 PM
Library:SOUTHEAST REGIONAL
Location:SHAKESPEARE ROOM
Event Type:ADULT
Age Group:ADULTS, TEENS
Description:The Southeast Regional Library and the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies present a fascinating lecture series:
Explaining the World Through Mythology: Tales of Far-away Lands and Long-ago Times. This week we will be discussing Irish, Welsh and Norse mythology.
The early shamanistic mythologies of Northern Europe demonstrate a closeness to the natural world, and its enchantments, that fades later during the High Middle Ages. Irish, Welsh, and Scandinavian mythologies, while having starkly different characters, share the concept of a world in which gods and goddesses themselves struggle with the forces of the universe. Magic as an ethical tool from Thor’s hammer, Freya’s ring, and the Bifrost rainbow, from the Irish cauldron of poetic inspiration to its later incarnations as the Holy Grail, and the flower women of the Welsh epic the Mabinogeon, describe a world in which the supernatural and the “real” are twin aspects of one constantly shifting reality. Ireland as a meeting point for Norse and Celtic culture, Wales’ Arthurian cycle, and Norse legends in the New World, will all be discussed.
This event is suitable for ages 14 and up; please do not bring small children as this is a lecture, not a story time. Seating is limited, so registration is required for each individual wishing to attend. The lecture will begin promptly at 6:30, so please plan to arrive a few minutes early as late arrivals may not be admitted into the event.

We'll look at different platforms and communities in which fans participate, create, and even remix content from the series: from facebook communities, to YouTube videos, to character's Twitter accounts, to online quizzes and trivia contests, and beyond. These spaces and communities are both separate from and in dialogue with PBS Masterpiece and its industry-produced digital content, which we'll also explore. We'll see how the world of Downton looks and feels to its fans online, and how digital culture promotes ever increasing participatory involvement with the series.

Title:BIG IDEAS FORUM
Date:Monday, January 25, 2016
Time:6:45 PM
Library:NORTH VALLEY REGIONAL
Location:MEETING ROOM
Event Type:ADULT
Age Group:ADULTS, TEENS
Description:Bitcoin and the Future of Money

What is the role of Bitcoin and similar cryptocurrencies in our future, and (by the way) what is Bitcoin? Is Bitcoin technology simply an unstable financial vehicle intended for clandestine or illicit commerce, or does it have broader economic application?

“Control of currency is one of the most important tools a government wields.” The world is changing. Sweden is presently the most cash-free society in the world, and Ecuador will soon host the first-ever state-run electronic payment system. How should we view the world economy’s drift away from notes and coins in favor of digital currencies?

Join us on January 25, 2015 for a discussion based on the book The Age of Cryptocurrency by Paul Vigna and Michael J. Casey.

This program is co-sponsored by the New Friends of the North Valley Library.
