Art Docent Talks: Peggy Guggenheim -Men, Money, and Modern Art

Event Type: Adult
Age Group(s): Adults
Date: 5/1/2025
Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Time: 2:00 PM
Description:
Docents from Phoenix Art Museum present a series of one-hour talks on a wide variety of art topics. Art is a transcendent force, and we'll experience its power by viewing and discussing various periods and works of art. This Month: This talk sprang from the 2002 book, Art Lover: A Biography of Peggy Guggenheim , by
Anton Gill. She was born into money and was on her way to leading an ordinary (if
scandalous for the time) life of the idle rich, when just before age 40 she seized on her
reason for being: collecting modern art and supporting the artists creating it. We use Gill’s
meticulously researched story of her life as the framework to metaphorically “hang” many
of the artworks she collected over the last half of her life and use her collection to discuss
what makes “modern art” what it is.
