 The National Library of Medicine proudly presents this exceptional traveling exhibition June 21 to July 13. The exhibit looks at the African American men and women who served as surgeons and nurses during the American Civil War and how their service as medical providers challenged the prescribed notions of race and gender pushing the boundaries of the role of African Americans in America. This exhibition was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine with research assistance from The Historical Society of Washington, D.C.
