Reaching back 12,000 years, Indian inhabitants made their home in what we now call Arizona. Today, Arizona is home to 22 federally recognized American Indian communities. The Hopi Tribe is an American Indian community living in villages at the base and tops of three mesas in north central Arizona. The Hopi are descendants of the Ancestral Pueblo people.
